Alex Ellis joined DExEU as Director General in January 2017 and focuses mainly on the EU institutions and Member States.
He has extensive experience in EU affairs, as he served as cabinet member of José Manuel Barroso, former President of the European Commission, from 2004 to 2007. Here he mainly focused on policy areas including energy, climate change, competition, development, trade and strategy. Prior to that, he worked at the UK Representation to the EU and was involved in the negotiations to establish the euro and the EU’s 7-year budget.
Ellis was British Ambassador to Portugal from 2007 to 2010 and Ambassador to Brazil from 2013 to 2016. He started at the Foreign Office supporting political transition in South Africa following the release of Nelson Mandela.
