Human rights in an increasingly dangerous world: Lord Alton of Liverpool in conversation with Whitehouse Communications

Last week we hosted a fascinating event with Lord Alton of Liverpool, Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights, for a thought-provoking Q&A discussion with Whitehouse Communications Chairman, Chris Whitehouse.

Lord Alton, a former Chief Whip of the Liberal Party who was first elected to Parliament in 1979 and joined the House of Lords as a Crossbench Peer in 1997, has dedicated his career to human rights advocacy. He spoke about the vital work of the Human Rights Committee, covering issues such as forced labour in UK supply chains, transnational repression, and mental health. He also highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan and warned of the risks posed by recent cuts to foreign aid from the U.S. and the U.K.

The packed event was attended by representatives from leading human rights organisations, eager to hear Lord Alton’s insights on key human rights policy topics, including children’s rights and the intersection of security and human rights. It was a valuable opportunity for those committed to human rights to come together, exchange ideas, and reaffirm the importance of continuing the fight to defend fundamental rights.
