Local Government Association calls for overhaul of children’s mental health services

The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned that services for children and young people with mental health problems need a complete overhaul. The LGA said the current “fragmented” system means children are forced to navigate a myriad of different mental health organisations in order to access care and that some children are falling through the gaps as a result of funding problems in the NHS.

It also said the current system also does not link up issues that impact on children’s mental health as a result of their parents’ mental health issues which could be related to domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse.

The LGA is calling on the Government to provide adequate funding and resources to ensure early diagnosis for children.
