Science Minister David Willetts has announced £48 million of new investment to help fund research projects aimed at tackling health problems, including a smartphone app to help diagnose delirium. More than 70 schemes have been awarded funds. The money comes from the Biomedical Catalyst scheme run jointly by the Medical Research Council and the Government’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board. Professor Sir John Savill, chief executive of the Medical Research Council said: “Since its inception, the Biomedical Catalyst has awarded over £170m to UK scientists and businesses. This has been matched by an additional £97m of private investment…The academic-industry partnerships forged through this investment will help to improve lives by delivering the next generation of innovative therapies and will help drive the UK economy.”
