Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has expressed his agreement with NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens on the existence of a big gap between what general practitioners do and what hospital doctors do. The Secretary of State called for the gap to be closed and suggested this could involve consultants working in general practice as part of a multidisciplinary team, or primary care delivered by acute trusts in some areas, although he went on to clarify that the Department of Health’s role consisted in setting expected outcomes rather than prescribing exact models of care to be introduced.
