Government accused of "damaging children's health"

The Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has accused the Government of โ€œdamaging childrenโ€™s healthโ€ by allowing academies and free schools to opt out of nutritional standards for pupilsโ€™ lunches. Professor Terence Stephenson said the โ€œirresponsibleโ€ exemption was undermining the drive to tackle childhood obesity, insisting: โ€œIf itโ€™s the right policy for children in maintained schools, itโ€™s the right policy for all childrenโ€. But the Department for Education dismissed Professor Stephensonโ€™s claims as โ€œutterly disingenuous and untrueโ€, adding: โ€œThere is no evidence whatsoever that academies and free schools serve less healthy food than council-run schoolsโ€.
