The Public Accounts Committee claimed that the Charity Commission has failed to raise its game after the Cup Trust scandal, in which one of the UK’s biggest charities raised £177 million in 11 months but gave just £55,000 to good causes through legal avoidance. An estimated £170 million in tax is also lost in a year through the abuse of the Gift Aid scheme. MPs found that the Charity Commission had failed to act robustly to deal with clear cases of abuse and concluded that they had “little confidence” in its ability to address its shortcomings.
