Council leaders in Wales are calling for urgent talks with First Minister Carwyn Jones to put forward alternative proposals for reorganisation. Earlier this year a Welsh Government backed inquiry into public services concluded that the 22 Welsh county councils must be cut by half. The Williams Commission suggested reducing council numbers by mergers using existing boundaries. However, the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) said it wanted to set up a task force to carry out a โpragmatic examination of existing boundariesโ. The WLGA also said a โproperly costed financial analysisโ was needed, but council leaders accepted that changes would happen.
