A report by the Care Quality Commission found that the number of detentions under the Mental Health Act is now at the highest on record. The act was used over 50,000 times last year to detain patients in hospital – the highest ever recorded. The Care Quality Commission raised concern about the use of blanket bans on activities such as internet and phone use and access to outdoor space. The report also criticised the practice of putting patients in police custody despite health facilities being available.
