IDS claims Government's reforms to the welfare system stand in the tradition of great Conservative reformers

In a speech to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Centre for Social Justice thinktank, Iain Duncan Smith claimed that the Governmentโ€™s reforms to the welfare system stand in the tradition of great Tory reformers such as Wilberforce and Shaftesbury. The Work and Pensions Secretary said his changes to the welfare state were about trying โ€œto put hope back where it has goneโ€ rather than simply saving money.ย Mr Duncan Smith also challenged what he described as a left-wing belief that the welfare systemโ€™s success was dependent on how much money the state spends.ย
