In a speech to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Centre for Social Justice thinktank, Iain Duncan Smith claimed that the Governmentโs reforms to the welfare system stand in the tradition of great Tory reformers such as Wilberforce and Shaftesbury. The Work and Pensions Secretary said his changes to the welfare state were about trying โto put hope back where it has goneโ rather than simply saving money.ย Mr Duncan Smith also challenged what he described as a left-wing belief that the welfare systemโs success was dependent on how much money the state spends.ย
