Tension rises between Government departments over Universal Credit programme

The ongoing tension between the Cabinet Office and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has taken another turn today, with leaked documents showing that the Cabinet Office has accelerated the pullout of its team of Government Digital Service (GDS) IT experts from the project after “serious tensions” over the progress of the overhaul of the project. Minutes of a project meeting held in November 2013 concluded that one of the most serious problems facing Universal Credit this year is that the DWP might “not be able to obtain the skills required to replace the GDS within the current market”.
