It has been reported that a Department of Health document has warned that awarding further pay increases to NHS managers could jeopardise patient care. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that such spending needs to be tightened and is planning to block excessive pay rises at NHS England and other health quangos. Simon Stevens, who will replace Sir David Nicholson as chief executive of NHS England next year, has previously been praised by Mr Hunt for offering to take a 10% pay cut.
