Senior MPs call for cross-sector and government collaboration to safe-guard and future-proof UK media

The All-Party Parliamentary Media Group yesterday called for cross-government and industry collaboration to safe-guard the future of media and its role in society. A pack setting out the group’s agenda for 2019 can be viewed here.

The All-Party Parliamentary Media Group Chair, Rosie Cooper MP, used the group’s Annual Reception in parliament to call for industry, government and regulators to work together to gain a deeper understanding of how audiences use media; the role of the industry in tackling fake news; the direction of media as a business; and media as a factor in social isolation and social pressures.

All-Party Parliamentary Media Group Chair, Rosie Cooper MP said:

“‘Over the last twelve months we’ve seen a series of high-profile cases where people have suffered as a result of pressures placed on them through social media, where businesses have had their security compromised, and where fake news has been able to gain traction.

“As a group, our aim is to help the UK respond to dramatic changes in the way people consume information and to make sure our media industry remains a world leader. We work with the industry to ensure modern media is safe and works in a way which supports our economy and society and, where necessary, we push for regulatory guidance to achieve this.”

The event was addressed by Secretary of State for Digital Culture, Media and Sport Jeremy Wright MP, who spoke about the importance of diversity in the sector and the need to tackle misinformation and disinformation. It was attended by industry leaders from broadcast, tech, publishing, film, fashion, advertising and communications.
