As the UK government moved to launch the SAF Revenue Certainty Mechanism, domestic Sustainable Aviation Fuel producers faced a threat to investment from untariffed imports. Whitehouse ran a targeted government relations campaign to press the case for tariff protection engaging the Transport Secretary, senior Treasury and Business officials, and the Trade Remedies Authority, who agreed to recommend a review.
The challenge
SAF producers based in the UK were looking to expand their capabilities with the announcement of the SAF Revenue Certainty Mechanism. However, imports from other countries threatened investment as there were no tariffs in place for the new sector.
Our approach
Whitehouse delivered a targeted government relations campaign focused on the Transport Secretary and senior Treasury and Business officials. It undertook a policy audit to identify legislative and regulatory routes to support the emerging industry and mapped key stakeholders, including influential MPs and Parliamentary Groups. Whitehouse also developed strategic messaging and secured senior meetings across the Treasury, Business and Transport departments – including the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) – to press the case for tariffs on international imports to safeguard the developing SAF and eSAF sectors.
The outcome
Through its work, Whitehouse made clear and persuasive arguments for the need to implement tariffs on Sustainable Aviation Fuel Feedstocks to protect a developing industry. The TRA were persuaded by our arguments and recommended a review be undertaken.
